How to remove that rogue antivirus package

It would seem that a lot of people have unwittingly installed a fake antivirus program when installing a system file or video codec that was downloaded from a shady website. Installing the downloaded file can lead the unwary to install a sophisticated but fake antivirus program that is really determined to scam them out of their money and their credit card details.
This page is where we discuss some of the technical stuff we've done. We'll describe in some detail how we have resolved some recent problems. We've produced our own articles where we have not found any other relevant articles or complete articles on the internet. We hope that these may be useful to you.

Please remember that any advice given here is just that. Though well researched and in all cases, worked on in reality by us - on real cases - you use the advice given here at your own risk.

Where possible, please take a backup of your data before you follow any of our links and advice.

How to restore your lost file associations

* Your computer boots to the desktop but won't show the toolbar or the Start button.
* You can't run a program
* If you do manage to run a program, you are presented with an 'Open With..' dialog.

This usually happens when your computer has lost its file associations. We've only seen this happen when a computer has been infected with a virus.

Here's some help on how to remove it. Take care. The help that follows is meant for experienced PC users only.
