The Buffalo Linkstation is a hard disk device that you connect to your network.
You do this by plugging it into your broadband router. It comes with free software
that you can install on up to 5 of your computers at home and once installed, the
software automatically backs up your computers.
Amongst other features, it can behave as an iTunes server. It can store all your media such as music, photos and video and make them available to any computer on your network that is running the iTunes software.

The Netgear Stora comes in many different combinations and it is also a hard
disk device that you connect to your network. You do this by plugging it into your
broadband router. It does not come with backup software but it can act as a
centralized destination for your backups - note that most versions of Windows
comes with some backup capabilities.
Like the Buffalo Linkstation, it can behave as an iTunes server. Unlike the Buffalo, the Netgear Stora has an additional disk bay. You can use this bay to add an extra hard disk and this disk can be used to automatically backup the first disk for added security and safety.
As an alternative option, the 2nd disk can instead be used to extend the size of the first disk, leading to a maximum disk size of around 4TB.
